A grifter is defined as “a person who swindles you by means of deception or fraud”. A grifter is akin to the con man, as they typically gain your confidence and sell you a product that is worthless. Grifters take extreme stances, claim to be things like; “influencer”, “citizen journalists”, “self-help guru”, “podcaster”, “political-analysts”, “truth-tellers”, or as “deeply religious” which is the saddest form of grifting. The whole time, they don’t believe half of what they say, and often do the exact opposite of what they value.

Taking advantage of people’s faith in God in order to enrich yourself is one of the more common grifts i see online. A lot of these people claim that Christianity is under some sort of attack, and pretend to be martyrs when its simply not true. Grifters these days try to use a fair amount of victimhood in order to make their money: They’re always convincing their potential tricks that there will be an imminent attack on certain ideologies that they claim to adhere to. The whole time, they don’t actually care.

Grifters need people to make them successful, so when they capture an audience, you will notice that their ideologies will often start changing to better mimic other grifters of the same clothe, making sure they all stay on the same page. Grifters create merchandise, hats, banners, flags, bumper stickers with their popular slogans, and you can typically only get this exclusive merch if you visit their website.

The grift market is saturated, and it is because regular people don’t read anymore. They would rather watch a youtube/tiktok video of a person who “sounds” as if they read, tell them what is going on in the world. If they sound smart, and align to people’s pre-existing beliefs, they can start printing money.

So beware of the grift, and don’t be a trick! Despite what pop culture says, Tricking IS still tricking if you have the money. Influencer is a direct synonym for Grifter.
